Mongolia is a country located in Central
Asia neighbored by Russia
and China.
It is the 18th largest country in the world but sparsely populated
with 2.46 million people making it one of the least densely populated areas in
the world. Mongolia
has affluent mineral resources and the largest steppe area on the planet.
Almost half the population is engaged in agriculture and the urban population
is primarily located in the capital, Ulaanbaatar
as well as a few other large towns. Transportation, communications services and
infrastructure are limited and the major industries outside of agriculture are
cashmere processing, copper and gold mining, food processing, and construction
materials.
The population of Mongolia is only 2.5 million people with about
900,000 people living I the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. Over the last decade there has
been tremendous rural to urban migration primarily for economic reasons. This has caused a swelling of residents in
the capital city of Ulaanbaatar
without an adequate supply of housing for the residents. Surprisingly, Ulaanbaatar has a very
high person per square meter rate due largely to the lack of apartment supply
and the low income of migrating residents.
